June 2024 has been proclaimed East Bay Regional Park District Month by unanimous resolution of the EBRPD Board. This local resolution is done in conjunction with the state level resolution ACR 152 CA Mountain Biking Month. Both resolutions are celebrations of various positive aspects mountain biking brings to communities.
Mountain biking is getting thousands of kids off screens and out on trails improving their physical and mental health, connecting them with nature and shaping the future stewards of our open spaces. Mountain biking provides a positive economic stimulus to CA and improves our quality of life. We are a pipeline of stewardship volunteers and have raised the standards for sustainable trail construction and maintenance. These are but a few of the benefits.
Both the park district and state resolutions put these benefits of mountain biking in front of our elected officials, some of whom may not be so familiar with the benefits, and provide an acknowledgement of those positive aspects. We appreciate the support of our elected officials that allowed these resolutions to happen. The resolutions are one step towards educating elected officials, decision makers in many cases, about mountain biking’s many aspects. EBRPD John Mercurio noted that mountain bike advocacy efforts over the past couple of years have changed his perception from a historical adversarial one to a constructive and cooperative view. Resolutions such as these are a step toward more trails, better trails, access, and funding for trails.
As part of Mountain Biking Month, BTCEB has 4 rides on tap. Come on out and even introduce a friend to mountain biking.
