About BTCEB

Bicycle Trails Council is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was founded in 1987 by a dedicated group of volunteers who successfully fought the impending closure of almost all mountain bike trails in the East Bay! We are the oldest mountain bike advocacy group in the United States and one of the founding clubs of IMBA.

Our mission is to educate cyclists in responsible mountain biking, to advocate for appropriate access, and to promote community among trail users so all may fully enjoy and preserve the natural spaces of the East Bay.

We envision a united trails community where mountain bikers, equestrians and hikers happily coexist on trails, both narrow and wide, extending each other due courtesy and caution, in open spaces, everywhere.

We are the oldest mountain bike advocacy group in the United States and one of the founding clubs of IMBA.

Today, we are active with programs that educate trail builders, promote responsible riding, and advocate for increased trail access. Our trail crews excel at maintaining trails in our local parks and our members and partners have volunteered countless hours to build new trails and improve existing ones.

Our marquee group rides are the monthly Gala Ride and our women-specific Ride Like A Girl. Both are led by experienced local riders who know the trails and offer a group for all skill and fitness levels. You can generally count on enjoying snacks and cold drinks post-ride.

Our Board

Lauren Haughey, President

My passion for the outdoors began as a young person, through a combination of influencing factors including backpacking trips with my father, and a political activist mother. The result of those early years led to a love of the outdoors and an ongoing urge to advocate for the care and access to open space.

I am currently the CFO for the National Interscholastic Cycling Association (NICA), a national nonprofit that provides governance and programming to promote youth adventure and interscholastic MTB leagues throughout the country. Additionally, I volunteer my time as a board member on the California Mountain Bike Coalition (CAMTB) – a 501(c)(4), as an Alameda County election worker, and as a coach on the Oakland Composite Youth (NICA) MTB Team, of which both my kids participated on. I served as the BTCEB board Treasurer from 2012 – 2019, and now as the President.

I spend most of my free time mountain biking, trail running, hiking and road-tripping with my husband to explore new places to mountain bike. I currently live in Oakland, California, have two college aged kids, and hold Bachelor’s degrees in History and Accounting in addition to an MPAcc.

Jamuel Starkey,
Vice President (interim)

I’ve been riding my entire life but never having really ridden the hills and trails of the Bay Area until the last 10 years or so.  Originally from the Mid-West I’ve been an East Bay resident for over 20 years.  I owe much of my local trail knowledge to the riding friends and fellow BTCEB club members I’ve met along the way.

As you may know I’ve been the editor of the club’s e-newsletter The Buzz for the past few years as well as served as the Communications Director and Gala Ride Leader.  In my new role as VP I hope to leverage by broad knowledge of the club to lend a hand where necessary to support critical club functions as well as pilot new approaches to growing BTCEB both internally and externally.

When not working I spend my day chasing after my 3 kids and their pursuits in life. And then either thinking about about or actually getting out on rides.

Alan Enrici, Treasurer

Greetings fellow cyclists! My name is Alan Enrici and I am the BTCEB treasurer. I am a converted roadie who started riding more decades ago than I care to admit. I was born in the East Bay and have been a lifetime user of our wonderful variety of open spaces.  After a career of corporate accounting and finance roles, I have been able to semi-retire and aim to get out on the trails as much as possible. As treasurer, I hope to use my experience to keep track of the donations from our generous members and ensure the money is spent towards BTCEB goals.  See you on the trails!

KC Chaudhry, Secretary

I have been mountain biking on and off for the last twenty years, the last six in the East Bay, and I love access to local trails to be able to do so. I appreciate that it takes effort and advocacy to make trails accessible for mountain biking.

I have worked with non-profits for the last ten years, and I really appreciate what BTCEB is doing for mountain biking in the east bay. I hope to bring my passion for mountain biking and my experiences working with non-profits to help BTCEB fulfill its mission.

Scott Bartlebaugh,
Advocacy Director

I’ve enjoyed many flavors of cycling and I’m excited to participate on the BTCEB board.  Since 2018 I’ve been the BTCEB lead for trail work at Crockett Hills and built a working relationship with the park supervisor and members of the EBRPD Trail Development group.  As advocacy director I hope that we can build positive relationships with land managers and other trail stakeholders  to  improve both mountain bike trail access and trail experiences for all trail users while protecting sensitive habitat.   My participation on the CAMTB Advisory Council helps to learn what other organizations across the state are experiencing and how to take advantage of that here.   I also enjoy learning more about trail construction & maintenance and the characters you meet diggin’ in the dirt.

Jared Willbergh,
Membership Director

I have been a runner and cyclist since 2007.  After a friend invited me on a mountain bike ride in 2020, I never went back to riding on the road.  I enjoy the transformative feeling that mountain biking gives me and spend most of my weekends either mountain biking or running in the East Bay hills.  I have developed a passion for being on trails and enjoy advocating for equitable trail access.

MTB Rider, Trails Director (vacant)

The Trails Director takes on the leadership role of implementing BTCEB’s trail maintenance goals. This includes guiding the organization’s efforts in trail development, trail maintenance and the management of volunteers for trail work. The parks and trails that the BTCEB and Trail Director focus on include all of the East Bay parks with an emphasis on Joaquin Miller Park, Crockett Hills, Fernandez Ranch and other John Muir Land Trust parks, Pleasanton Ridge, EBMUD, Walnut Creek Open space etc.

The Director works closely with the Advocacy Director, communicates and coordinates with land managers to maintain the quality of trails, and reports to the land managers BTCEB’s efforts in trail maintenance and problems addressed. The trails director is responsible for planning and managing the overarching efforts of the Trail Stewardship program (TSP). The Trails Director should be aware of any efforts by land managers to build new trails in the East Bay, and be able to coordinate BTCEB’s efforts to support trail development projects.

David Wilcox, Events Director

I have lived in Oakland since 2018, and work in the bike industry as a mechanic. I have been a mountain biker for almost 30 years, and have also been known to ride some gravel, road, or even race cyclocross. Through my work I aim to help people enjoy their time on the bike more, and am hoping my time on the BTCEB board will help facilitate more access to trails for all skill levels here in the East Bay.

As the Events Director of the BTCEB I hope to bring more of the massive community of mountain bikers in the East Bay out to our rides, trail maintenance & building events, and advocacy efforts for more, better access throughout the area.

Josh Church, Director-At-Large

I’m an East Bay native and a long time BTCEB member. Like many of us, I both enjoy and rely on the opportunities to get away on a bicycle. It’s always recreational, usually social, and quite often therapeutic. And it’s always about the journey. I’ve joined the BTCEB Board to help our club reach new riders, new potential members, and new partnerships with other local organizations.

Tom Gandesbery, Director-At-Large

I have been riding bicycles in and around the East Bay for decades, both on dirt and pavement.  I also enjoy running the trails in the hills and hiking with my wife Mary and our dog Lucy in Redwood Park.  In the summer months my windsurfing compulsion kicks in and I can be found skimming across the waters near the Bay Bridge. My focus is on improving trails and user experience at Joaquin Miller Park and other East Bay parks.

Rebecca Lewington, Director-At-Large

I live in South Hayward and I’ve been riding in the Bay Area for a quarter of a century, and I’ve come to treasure the access we have while understanding the tangle of history, bureaucracy and entrenched interests that prevents the expansion of that access to existing and new trails. Being the best trail users, the best trail stewards, and the best partner we can be are perhaps the strongest levers we have to change that.

I lead our women’s series, Ride Like a Girl. Our mission is to have fun, learn new trails and meet other women who love to mountain bike. But to me, it’s more than that. It’s an opportunity to help nurture strong, confident, awesome women. And it’s an opportunity to share our values: respect for the trails, respect for the environment and respect for other trail users.

Jeff Royal, Director-At-Large

I’ve lived, worked, and played in the (East!) Bay Area for over 30 years.  My home is in Richmond where I live with my wife and soon-to-be-fledged daughter (my son has already flown).  I work at UC Berkeley and have a master’s degree in Resource Economics where my focus was natural resource management.

I enjoy being outdoors, preferably covering ground on my mountain bike, but just as content (almost) enjoying the laid-back perspective of a good hike where I can lose myself in photography and my surroundings.  Just don’t ask me to go for a run.  Ever.   I marvel at the growth mountain biking has seen, especially in the last 5-7 years, both in numbers and technology.  I see it as critical for local advocacy groups to help land management officials and public stakeholders truly understand the varied impacts of such growth.

Serving on the BTCEB board is a way for me to help make mountain biking in the abundant open spaces of the East Bay, more accessible and enjoyable for diverse riders of all skill levels.

Max Wilson Sladkus, Director-At-Large

From the young age of two I have been riding bikes all across the East Bay. Whether it be commuting to school or climbing Big Springs in Tilden, my biggest joy in life is riding my bike.
As a high school senior I race for Albany High School and participate in both enduro and xc races.

With new projects popping up hoping to achieve access for mountain bikers hitherto unseen in the Bay like the Briones Pilot Project and the Wildcat Flow Trail. I hope to advocate and work towards achieving the goals of these projects in favor of mountain bikers so that we can get the fun sustainable trails all types of users deserve.
