BTCEB Unveils Bike Bell Stations at Crockett Hills and Briones

A year long effort with the East Bay Regional Park District, the Regional Parks Foundation, and BTCEB with financial support from REI has two bike bell stations up and running at Briones Alhambra Creek staging area and at the Crockett Hills staging area.

The bell program is modeled programs that have been successful in many areas including San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, San Diego, and Folsom to name a few.   The idea is that bikes even when traveling slowly can be very startling to a hiker or equestrian.   By using a bell it provides and early warning to other trail users that somebody is coming and since it’s continuous it gives an idea on how quickly they are closing in.  The encounter is much less surprising and much less of an issue.   These are inexpensive starter bells meant to introduce folks to bells, get some positive feedback and hopefully spur wider bell use.

So if you’re not already a bell-er please give one a try.   And although it says ‘borrow’ it’s definitely ok to keep the bell if you’re going to use it.  Bells can also be used by hikers, dog walkers, and even equestrians if they choose.
